Gilded Age Mansions of Fifth Avenue

In the late 19th century, as New York City’s wealthiest residents moved uptown to escape the crowded downtown neighborhoods, they didn’t just build grand homes—they built colossal palaces. From architectural details like turrets, gargoyles, and moats to wrought iron inspired by Italian Renaissance tombs, the Gilded Age mansions along Fifth Avenue were as opulent as their owners. Join us for a journey through time, exploring the incredible sights and stories behind these iconic homes, built by prominent American families such as the Pulitzers, Vanderbilts, and Fricks.

In this fascinating workshop, we’ll:

  • Compare Then and Now: Explore the evolution of the neighborhood with maps, illustrations, and vintage photos dating back to the 19th century.

  • Hear Insider Stories: Discover fascinating tales about some of Museum Mile's most notable residents, including Joseph Pulitzer, Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick.

  • Explore Beaux-Arts Architecture: Learn about the architectural style that defined the era and how it contributed to the City Beautiful Movement in New York.

  • Meet the Architects: Discuss the visionaries behind the great mansions and museums, such as Stanford White, Whitney Warren, CPH Gilbert, and the architectural team of Carrère & Hastings.
